Information
To prevent invasive pink salmon (Pacific salmon) from entering the norwegian fjords ecosystem and protect native wild Atlantic salmon from extinction and to improve river conservation efficiency Huawei has developed the world’s first AI-based automated salmon filtering system deployed in a natural river. It has proven to be effective in the field since full pilot implementation in June 2022. In 2021, Huawei Norway and Berlevåg Hunting and Fishing Association (BJFF) began working together to develop an automated, AI-powered fish-filtering system to address the issue. As a world first, the solution had to be designed from scratch. Huawei Norway and BJFF developed a fish-recognition algorithm based on tens of thousands of images collected from underwater cameras from late June to September 2021. The algorithm can identify Atlantic salmon and pink salmon with 90% accuracy. In June 2022, the first an AI-powered fish trap was deployed in Storelva river in Norway.
