Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) help society tackle some of the most challenging problems, improve customer experiences, and spur innovation. At the same time, complex models trained on rich datasets sometimes behave in unexpected ways that can lead to unintended outcomes, such as demographic bias or privacy leaks. In this talk, I will briefly survey the new science that is emerging to mitigate such harms, and some of the lessons learned in AWS in the application of that science to the practice of responsible AI, including new tools such as AWS AI Service cards.
